There are over two million alcohol related visits to A&E each year, placing an ever increasing burden on NHS budgets and resources. There is evidence that IBA can be effective in reducing harmful and hazardous drinking.

For every eight people who receive simple alcohol advice, one will reduce their drinking to within lower-risk levels (Moyer et al., 2002).

Who is it for?

This alcohol IBA resource can be given to anyone attending the Accident & Emergency Department, where alcohol is a contributing factor, and an intervention is appropriate.

Format:

The resource pack contains four separate publications, contained within a brandable metallic silver sleeve:

‘The resource enables A&E staff to deliver alcohol identification and brief advice in a
prompt and effective way'.

What's in it?

The four separate resources, packaged in a metallic, sealable envelope, contain information around:
  • Alcohol and the role it may have played resulting in a visit to A&E
  • The effect alcohol has on the brain, and the way it affects behaviour
  • Alcohol and overdose – do's and don'ts
  • When is it time to call an ambulance?
  • Using alcohol with illegal and legal drugs
  • Audit tools
  • Alcohol and what happens in A&E
  • Alcohol use and advice on how to change behaviour
  • Localised agency, service and information resources
  • Binge drinking
  • Staying safe
  • Cutting down
  • Long-term change

The A&E pack can include branding and
localised information on local alcohol services, support agencies, and resources.
