AKA: Ket, Vitamin K, Special K, Horse Tranquilliser.

BACKGROUND

Anaesthetic with painkilling and hallucinogenic properties.

FORM:

Tablet, injectable liquid or powder form.

LEGAL STATUS:

>    Illegal.
>    Class C under the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971).
>    Illegal to possess (maximum penalty two years in jail) or supply (maximum penalty 14 years in jail).

EFFECTS:

Ketamine is what is known as a ‘dissociative anaesthetic’ (not a tranquilliser) which numbs the body, and creates the effect of removing users from their sense of reality. Common effects include ‘out of body experiences’, hallucinations and temporary paralysis. The effects of Ketamine are influenced by the user’s mood and environment.

RISKS:

Risk of serious injury without even realising you’ve been hurt. High doses can cause breathing problems, unconsciousness or heart failure. Extremely dangerous when mixed with other drugs or alcohol.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS:

Not yet fully understood. However, tolerance and dependence do develop.
